Permanent Retainer
A permanent retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back surfaces of the teeth after orthodontic treatment.
Why Is It Used?
Teeth can tend to move toward their original position after orthodontic treatment. A permanent retainer is fixed in place to help maintain the teeth in their corrected position.
Dietary Considerations
Avoid biting hard or sticky foods directly with the teeth where the permanent retainer is attached.
How Long Is It Worn?
A permanent retainer can remain in place for many years. In some cases, it may be recommended for long-term or lifelong retention.
Maintenance
- Clean around the retainer carefully whenever you brush your teeth.
- Pay particular attention to the area behind the teeth where the wire is bonded.
- Maintain regular oral hygiene around the retainer.
If the Retainer Breaks
If a permanent retainer becomes loose or breaks and cannot be repaired immediately, teeth may begin shifting. Contact your dentist or orthodontist promptly so that the retainer can be assessed and repaired.
